NAKAMOTO.NAKAMOTO WTF?

A BRIEF ESSAY ON HISTORICAL ASSET HACKING

Quite some time ago now, I began collaborating with a well-renowned OG Pepe Scientist, Oliver Morris. Creator of PEPETHEFROG, STACYPEPE, SECURITYPEPE, and many other legendary (and still pictureless) tokens.

Making tokens on XCP since age 13 in 2016 Oliver has a huge catalog of assets dating back to those days, and for some time we have talked about collaborating on some of those tokens. It should be noted that with XCP culture and culture generally, an owness is placed on scarce and historical assets. After some time of already being involved in various side projects together. Oliver came to me with some news.

What was the news?

An asset he had created in 2017 had come back to relevance and he wanted to act on it. Back in the day Oliver had made an asset for NAKAMOTOPEPE. At block 436,312. sometime later he followed that up with NAKAMOTOPEPE.NAKAMOTOPEPE no one knows why. Although it is pressumably one of the VERY FIRST subassets? (It was in fact the 27th EVER sub asset).

Upon making the intial asset he accidentally made the asset “divisable”. For those who don’t know, effectively it renders your token useless for all intents and purposes. It’s not broken persay, however it was just game over, for that little dream.. A lost relic in time.

This may indeed explain the issuing of NAKAMOTOPEPE.NAKAMOTOPEPE. Which was in fact made correctly & undivisable. Although no further action was taken with this card, as is often the way.

The time is now..

Fast forward to 2023 and the anniversary of his card was approaching along with that of RAREPEPE, who’s birthday it shares. This year something was different. Due to a wallet update on FREEWALLET.io It will soon be possible, for the first time to make Assets “undividable” allowing for a wave of lost and broken tokens to be “fixed” and recused from years of destitution.

Cometh the moment cometh the meme.

Oliver informed me that he wanted to start working on the original NAKAMOTOPEPE as it had been a long-held goal. We had several chats about ideas, and also the magic of bringing, old lost, broken relics back to life like a casting session for an early Quentin Tarantino movie.

During this process, I discovered the sub-asset, which honestly I think he had forgotten about, and when quizzed seemed surprised it existed. One thing was for sure. IT WAS NOT DIVISIBLE. Also with the anniversary of RAREPEPE approaching it was decided that the sub-asset should be launched for fun, in preparation of the original NAKAMOTOPEPE (to be released in October).

This is the card that you see before you today. It is designed to help spread the dankness of classical assets and allow new collectors to own a piece of history that would otherwise be out of reach.

Also, we love making assets. So that’s what we do. Oliver is a great guy and was a good sport putting himself up on the card, so I would like to take a few points to explain my thoughts about our collaboration:

About the Art:

We all know the token is the art. With that said here’s what went down.

Firstly we were obviously inspired by the joke of Nakamoto, not the mystery, but the joke of the joke. Anyone could be Nakamoto. There is no Nakamoto. Will we ever truly know?

I wanted to illustrate that it’s all just a joke, a drama in which we are all players. XCP is the Shakespeare of our time and in these early fumbling days, the monkeys are only just scrambling to attend the typewriter. The director is farce and the audience is PEPE. Feels good man. We are all Nakamoto in our own ways, and the way to illustrate that is through tokens. I hope the irony is not lost on you.

Matt Kane & Time Travel

We were enchanted by taking the opportunity to add an element of mandalian time travel into the mix. With such strong imagery and metaphysics, NOTKAMOTO is arguably the most influential NAKAMOTO since RAREPEPE itself. We also like the idea of hiding easter eggs. Something we hope to continue with. We took both the theme of an empty window of Satoshi, the stylistic rendering as a base, along with a few more ‘bits and bobs’. The idea of using a sub-asset based on another asset, based 5 years in the future is a new one on me! Love to see it

Disney

As a friend of Oliver i’m pretty sure he loves Disney world. Who doesn’t? I wanted to capture a little joke and so I rebuilt the frame of the asset in Disney Dollar style, also thus hopefully illustrating the playful, fun money concept behind this piece.

Monty Python

Oliver & I are both indeed from the UK, and while that is not by any means a prerequisite for enjoying the subtleties of python, or indeed the first to adapt it for Pepe. As a card designer, I can’t help but think sometimes I tend to subconsciously channel a satyrical pythonic narrative into my work. I guess it’s my way of illustrating that we all have a joke, but we all make room for Pepe. Obviously, the foot HAD to be green.

XCP & FLOONEYBIN

The narrative of PEPE is important. But it’s not all PEPE. None of us would be here without XCP, and without Joe Looney. We stand on the shoulders of giants and pioneers. Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? Good question. But who DO we know and often overlook while we go chasing rainbows while the gold is all around us?

With this said special attention was made to draw subtle attention of the double name flip. NAKAMOTOPEPE.NAKAMOTOPEPE. One factor removed.

Who REALLY made RAREPEPE? It wasn’t Satoshi, Dorian OR probably, Oliver.

Feelgood PEPE:

There are lots of faces of PEPEs used in classic RARE, dank, and FAKE PEPE creation. Our co-project PEP8LIENs already has 2! We feel that the “feels-good” Pepe is one of the dankest in creation and should take its place on our card as the ultimate PEPE!

That’s it pretty much. I’m sure there is some future stuff i have forgotten about, or I could explain about future burns, and why we made 3000 tokens while also at the same time saying the token is the art whilst explaining my views on scarcity. But hey… At least we locked it. Making this card with Oliver was not only a huge pleasure but also i’m honored to get my own name on some official 2017 blockchain action. When embarrassingly I was not yet committing art onchain. Thanks to Oliver, Pepe, Joe Looney, J-Dog, NAKAMOTO, that Mike and all the people involved in making this dream realized.
